James represents both institutional and individual clients in complex commercial and chancery matters and is known for his persuasive courtroom advocacy.Â
He has appeared in some of the highest profile litigation in Jersey in the past ten years, particularly in high-value shareholder disputes (notably the unfair prejudice regime), as well as proceedings for and against directors and other fiduciaries.Â
As part of the Restructuring and Insolvency team, James represents insolvency practitioners and creditors in recognition and complex asset recovery in corporate insolvencies. James is also a leading practitioner in Jersey schemes of arrangement, having acted in the two largest schemes in Jersey corporate history.Â
James regularly represents trustees and other fiduciaries in contentious trust law matters, particularly those with a corporate, directors' duties and cross-border element.Â
Since 2018, James has accepted instructions as external counsel to Jersey's Economic Crime and Confiscation Unit. He regularly advises institutional clients on white collar crime and contentious regulatory matters. Additionally, James is a leading expert of deferred prosecution agreements, having advised the Government of Jersey on the ambit and drafting of the Criminal Justice (Deferred Prosecution Agreements) (Jersey) Law 2023.Â
James read Classics with Linguistics as a Foundation Scholar at Queens' College, Cambridge. He was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2012, to the Jersey Bar in 2015 and the Cayman Islands Bar in 2016.Â
